Seaweed pressing became a popular art form during the Victorian era, when coastal summering was in fashion. Seaweed was collected, admired for its beauty, and preserved alongside other mementos of seaside life.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the art and science of seaweed pressing, creating compositions with a variety of species and natural forms. Using cotton rag paper, blotter paper, nylon cloth, and simple tools, you’ll arrange and press your seaweed into one-of-a-kind botanical collages.
The process is full of surprises—the final composition isn’t revealed until the seaweed has completely dried, which can take anywhere from a few days to a week. You’ll leave with your pressing to continue drying at home.
