This original piece is a combination of two printmaking processes: Cyanotype and Seaweed Pressing. To start, the paper is coasted with an emulsion that becomes light sensitive when dry. The surface is covered with seaweed, soap bubble, turmeric and other spices, and placed in UV light, where it can be exposed to the rays. When the exposure time is complete, the materials are removed from the surface and the paper is set in a water bath. Whatever was covered acts as resist and the areas that didn't completely block the rays are transformed into shades of blue. The watery effect becomes a perfect background for collaging seaweed on top of the designs, creating an ethereal feeling in this series.
This piece was made at the Truro Center for the Arts in Cape Cod, MA, when I instructed a workshop in these processes.
This seaweed pressing is pressed and dried into 8 x 10" acid free watercolor paper and signed by the artist. It will be packed flat for shipping.
